Companies that interact with smallholder farmers often have an interest in increasing a sustainable production of the crop (by for example promoting good agricultural practices). However, they do not have the guarantee that if they invest in farmer education they will be the ones reaping the benefits – farmers can always sell elsewhere. To address this risk, there are quite a few funds that companies can apply for. Usually these funds are accompanied by conditions with regard to environmental and social sustainability. The application procedures for these funds are often too complicated for Tanzanian companies to navigate. Chanzo has supported several companies in applying for funding.
